OSU Homecoming 2013 Theme Announced

'Branding A Brighter Orange' celebrates exciting times at Oklahoma State

The Oklahoma State University Alumni Association and Homecoming Executive team have unveiled the theme for OSU Homecoming 2013. This year, “America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration” is ‘Branding A Brighter Orange.’

“The Homecoming Executive team really wanted a theme that embodies the way OSU prepares and shapes its students,” said Blake Wieland, Homecoming executive director. “Every one who has attended our university leaves a better person, and we believe the theme ‘Branding A Brighter Orange’ showcases the power and reputation of both our students and alumni.”

This year’s Homecoming theme makes reference to the largest fundraising and marketing campaigns ever undertaken at OSU. The OSU Foundation’s Branding Success: The Campaign for Oklahoma State University is nearing the $1 billion mark in its support of students, faculty, facilities and programs. The campaign includes a $4 million goal to endow Homecoming and Student Programs at the OSU Alumni Association.

“Our university is seeing unprecedented growth, and the excitement amongst our students and alumni is most evident at Homecoming,” said Melisa Parkerson, Homecoming adviser and Alumni Association director of student programs. “We are all proud to be Cowboys, and we all bleed orange. I think the Homecoming Executive team’s theme is a great representation of our passion for OSU.”

The university’s America’s Brightest Orange campaign is also reflected in this year’s Homecoming theme. Though the university’s athletic team name has changed three times in its history, its primary colors of orange and black have remained since their selection in the late 1890s. It’s a tradition carried on by the Student Alumni Board with Orange Fridays and a vibrant representation of OSU’s academic and athletic successes.

“The Homecoming Executive team took notice of the importance of both the Branding Success and America’s Brightest Orange campaigns,” Wieland said. “These two campaigns together helped us put an emphasis on the way Oklahoma State students are shaped into excellent leaders who then give back to help support the university.

“We think its very special and important our graduates remember their time as an OSU Cowboy is an ongoing experience that continues long after they leave campus.”

The selection of a theme begins each year in January when the nine Homecoming executives hold a retreat to brainstorm ideas. Once a theme is selected, it is kept under wraps until the first Homecoming Steering meeting in February, which occurred Tuesday evening.

Homecoming 2013 is Oct. 14-19 in Stillwater and will conclude with the Texas Christian vs. OSU football game on Saturday, Oct. 19. Kick off time has not been set.

“America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration” has been presented each year by the OSU Alumni Association since 1920. It is run completely by more than 100 Homecoming student members with the collaboration of thousands in the Greek, residential life and student organization communities.

Last year, more than 82,000 alumni and friends returned for Walkaround at Homecoming. The event continues to set attendance records each year and is one of the largest single-day events hosted in Stillwater annually.
